The obverse side of the coin represents the iconic design by Augustus Saint-Gaudens of Lady Liberty wearing a native war bonnet. The band of the war bonnet is inscribed with “LIBERTY”, with 13 stars above it and the year of issue engraved below. The 13 stars represented the 13 colonies that united to form the United States of America.
The reverse of the $10 Indian Gold Eagle coin bears the portrayal of the majestic American bald eagle perched on a bundle of arrows with the olive branch coiling the bundle. On either side of the eagle are the mottos of the US, “E PLURIBUS UNUM” and “In God we trust”. The other inscriptions indicating country and face value are “UNITED STATES OF AMERICA” and “TEN DOLLARS”.
The Indian Head gold coin is an iconic artifact minted by the US Mint in the period of 1907 to 1916 and then partially till 1933. Augustus Saint-Gaudens is the designer of these enchanting coins. However, Saint-Gaudens unfortunately passed away in 1907. After the passing of Saint-Gaudens, the mint chief engraver, Charles E. Barber, as well as the public outrage for the motto to be included resulted in minute modifications in design.
The US Mint carries a profound legacy of more than 200 years of devotion to the American people. The gold coins were minted in the facilities of Denver, Philadelphia, Carson City, San Francisco, and New Orleans.
